I replied with one sentence.
Read your loan agreement.
He didn’t respond.
Two days later, Susan filed the required notices.
First, the bank froze Daniel’s business credit line.
Then his accountant called.
Followed by his largest supplier.
By Friday morning, Daniel finally realized something serious was happening.
He called, shouting.
“What did you do?”
I answered calmly, “I enforced a contract.”
“You’re destroying my company!”
“No. You transferred assets in violation of our agreement.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“I already did.”
Emily snatched the phone.
“You can’t do this to us!”
I smiled.
“You were right about one thing, Emily.”
“What?”
“Everyone agrees you shouldn’t be in that house.”
She fell silent.
Susan had already verified another important detail.
Emily wasn’t a property owner.
She wasn’t even a beneficiary.
She’d been living in a mansion legally belonging to Margaret and me.
And the contract they’d ignored was now moving faster than they could react.
The confrontation took place on a rainy Tuesday morning.
Daniel arrived at my office accompanied by Emily.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive watch was missing.
So was his usual confidence.
“You’ve made your point,” he said.
I stayed seated.
“Have I?”
“Give me another six months.”
“You had seven years.”
Emily slammed her handbag onto my desk.
“This is family!”
I met her gaze.
“You remembered that word today?”
Her face flushed.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Dad, if you take control of the company, hundreds of employees could suffer.”
“Then you shouldn’t have gambled their livelihoods.”
He stared.
Susan entered carrying a thick folder.
“Mr. Carter,” she said, “we’ve completed the asset review.”
She placed the documents on my desk.
Daniel read the first page.
His expression changed.
The second drained his face of color.
By the third, Emily had sat down.
Susan continued.
“We found $184,000 transferred from company accounts into an entity controlled by Emily.”
Emily shook her head.
“That was legitimate.”
“It wasn’t disclosed.”
Susan opened another folder.
“And here are the property records.”
Daniel looked up.
“What property records?”
“The mansion.”
Emily’s expression collapsed.
