We headed toward our car.
Emily shouted after us.
“You can’t just leave and pretend this didn’t happen!”
I opened Margaret’s passenger door.
Before climbing in, I glanced back.
“No,” I said calmly. “I won’t pretend.”
Then we drove through the gates.
Once the mansion vanished from sight, I reached into my briefcase.
Inside lay a contract Daniel had never bothered examining.
One capable of changing everything.
Daniel called the following morning.
“Dad, Emily was upset. You should apologize.”
“For what?”
“For making a scene.”
I gazed through my office window.
“Your wife blocked your mother at the gate.”
“She was protecting the house.”
“Our house.”
A pause followed.
Daniel sighed.
“Dad, be reasonable. You’re old. You and Mom don’t need a property this big.”
That told me everything.
They weren’t requesting anything.
They were waiting.
Waiting for us to disappear.
“I’ll think about it,” I said.
Daniel immediately relaxed.
“Good. We knew you’d understand.”
I ended the call.
Then contacted my attorney.
Susan Blake had handled my business agreements for twelve years.
“I need you to activate the agreement,” I told her.
Silence followed.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
“Then Daniel will be furious.”
“I know.”
We’d signed the agreement seven years earlier when Daniel desperately needed funding to rescue his construction business.
I’d supplied $600,000.
But it wasn’t an unconditional gift.
The money came through a secured family loan.
The collateral?
Daniel’s company.
Desperate for funds, he’d also accepted a provision allowing me to assume control if he defaulted.
He’d never defaulted.
Until recently.
What Daniel didn’t realize was that Susan had uncovered something three weeks earlier.
He’d secretly moved company assets into a new corporation controlled by Emily.
That breached our loan agreement.
It also made the outstanding debt immediately enforceable.
For the next several days, I took no public action.
Their frustration grew.
Emily shared mansion photographs online.
She displayed the remodeled kitchen.
Hosted dinner parties.
And told guests the property would soon be “officially theirs.”
Daniel messaged me.
Dad, stop being difficult. We need the property.
