Margaret looked down.
Vanessa gestured toward her.
“Just look! She’s behaving as though I deliberately hurt her!”
I positioned myself between them.
“Please leave.”
Vanessa gave a dismissive laugh.
“You know something, Richard? Daniel thinks you’re far too emotional to handle important financial matters. That’s why Charles will oversee the family finances after our wedding.”
I studied her expression.
“Is that what he believes?”
“Of course. And after that investment comes through, we won’t need to seek your approval anymore.”
She smiled with complete confidence.
I slightly opened the envelope to confirm the documents were inside.
“Thank you, Vanessa.”
Her confident expression disappeared.
“What for?”
“For proving that my attorney’s concerns were justified.”
Just then, the hotel manager entered the lounge.
“Mr. Bennett, Ms. Collins has arrived. Your requested private conference room is prepared.”
Vanessa looked confused.
“Why does everyone behave as though this hotel belongs to you?”
I calmly answered.
“Because it does.”
For the first time that evening, Vanessa had absolutely nothing to say.
Then she laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible.”
The hotel manager stood quietly beside us.
“No, Mrs. Bennett. Mr. Richard Bennett holds controlling ownership of this property.”
Vanessa suddenly turned pale.
Within several minutes, Daniel, Charles, and Vanessa’s mother gathered inside the conference room.
Rebecca waited beside an elegant mahogany table.
I set the sealed envelope before them.
Charles looked toward Rebecca.
“What is all this about?”
“Our business arrangement is over,” I explained.
I opened the envelope.
Rebecca passed Charles the formal investment cancellation notice.
His expression shifted almost instantly.
“You cannot cancel twelve million dollars at this stage!”
“I certainly can,” I explained. “We never signed a binding investment agreement, and the proposed financing remained conditional upon satisfactory due diligence.”
Charles struck the table with his open palm.
“That funding was scheduled to close Monday!”
“Then your company should have presented its financial circumstances truthfully.”
Rebecca placed an additional folder beside him.
“Our accounting team discovered substantial inconsistencies within the information provided to Mr. Bennett. We have retained those findings for the relevant parties.”
Charles slowly lowered himself into his chair.
Vanessa looked desperately toward Daniel.
“Say something!”
But my son was studying the second document.
“Dad, what does this mean?”
“Your access to the trust has ended.”
His voice became unsteady.
“You can’t possibly mean that.”
“Those discretionary payments were never promised, Daniel. The independent trustee has been informed that I will no longer approve additional gifts or recommend financial advances.”
Vanessa quickly grabbed the documents.
“And the house? You said we could have the lake house!”
“I agreed to consider your request. Ownership was never transferred.”
Her hands trembled visibly.
Rebecca explained in a measured voice.
“Mrs. Bennett, the residence remains legally held by the existing trust. Neither you nor Daniel possesses an ownership interest.”
Vanessa raised her voice.
“All this over one ridiculous wig?”
