PART 1
“I’ll be at our daughter Chloe’s wedding. How would I look in front of my NEW family if I skipped an event like that, right?”
When I saw that message from my ex-wife, Elena, I nearly passed out.
Fifteen years earlier, I had been standing in the hallway, holding our nine-month-old daughter in my arms, watching Elena pack her belongings into suitcases.
She said then: “You CAN’T give me the life I want. But Julian can. He bought me a brand-new car and even took me to the Maldives. Do you understand the kind of life he gives me? The kind of life I deserve!”
Julian was her boss, the man she’d already been cheating on me with for months.
Then she slammed the door.
Fifteen years of silence.
She disappeared from our lives, and I was left to raise our 6 little girls on my own.
I worked double shifts. I learned the difference between ten different shades of pink. I never missed a single school performance. I was always there for them.
Now my eldest daughter, Chloe, was getting married.
When I told her that her mother wanted to come to the wedding, she smiled and said: “Dad, tell her she’s welcome to come. I’ll take care of everything.”
I didn’t want to see Elena. But if that’s what my daughter wanted, I wasn’t going to stand in her way.
On the wedding day, I stood there filled with pride as I looked at all of my girls.
Then Elena arrived.
She was wearing an expensive sparkling dress and carrying a designer handbag.
She hugged Chloe and said: “Sweetheart, we’re finally together again. You have to understand… back then, everything was your FATHER’S FAULT.”
Chloe smiled and replied: “Mom, I’m so happy to see you. Come stand in the middle of the room. I have something I’d like to give you.”
A LARGE BOX was brought out for Elena. She tore off the lid.
I saw the shock on all 150 guests’ faces.
Elena turned pale and screamed: “Oh my God… How is this possible? HOW DARE YOU?!”
PART 2
I had spent 15 years raising my daughters, saving every unanswered invitation and returned photo their mother ignored. When she arrived at our daughter’s wedding with the man she chose over us, I thought I was ready to stay quiet again. Then my daughter asked for the one box I never wanted opened.
Fifteen years after my wife left me with our six daughters and ran off with her rich boss, she texted me like she was asking about the weather.
I was in my kitchen, checking the final wedding payments for my eldest daughter, Chloe, when my phone chimed.
I hadn’t heard from Elena in years. Not on the kids’ birthdays, not at graduations, and not when Maya, our youngest, asked me at eight years old if her mother would know her voice if she called.
I hadn’t heard from Elena in years.
But there she was.
“I’ll be at our daughter’s wedding, David. How would I look in front of my new family if I skipped an event like that, right? I expect no drama from you.”
“Dad?”
Chloe stood in the doorway with a folder of wedding invoices against her chest. She was 28 and beautiful in a way that still caught me off guard.
“What happened?” she asked.
“It’s your mother.”
“What did she want?”
I handed her the phone.
She read the message. “She said ‘my new family.’”
“I saw.”
“Not ‘I miss you.’ Not ‘I’m sorry.’ Not even ‘Can I come?’ She’s bringing Julian.”
“I’d bet on it.”
Julian was the man Elena left with. Her boss. The man with the car, the trips, the money, and the life she said she deserved.
I’d been standing in the hallway with nine-month-old Maya in my arms.
Chloe was 13, barefoot on the stairs. Stella was eight. The triplets, Charlotte, Violet, and Evelyn, were five and crying in the living room because they didn’t understand why their mother was packing suitcases.
