I Followed My Husband Downstairs—Then My Mother-in-Law Revealed Something Unexpected.

PART 2

That night I quietly recorded the remaining minutes of their conversation on my phone before slipping back upstairs to my room without making a single sound. Kenneth came upstairs just before dawn, kissing my forehead gently when he woke up and asking if I had slept well.

“Perfectly,” I lied with a calm smile, realizing for the first time that remaining silent could be a powerful tool to protect myself rather than excuse him.

That very afternoon, I made an urgent appointment with Mr. Callahan, a veteran family lawyer, bringing along the original deed to my house. The lawyer thoroughly reviewed the paperwork and confirmed that because my mother gifted me the property prior to my marriage, it remained entirely under my name, strictly advising me not to sign any documents and to secure all financial accounts.

When I logged into our joint bank account later that evening, I discovered a series of mysterious transfers totaling almost 300,000 pesos over the past eighteen months. Kenneth had previously claimed those transfers were advance payments to suppliers, structural repairs for his mother’s old property, and temporary loans to his sister, Chloe. I carefully printed every single statement, even though I could not yet prove where every dollar had landed.

Four days later, Kenneth walked into the kitchen carrying a thick leather folder.

“A business partner is expanding his distribution network,” Kenneth said with forced enthusiasm. “If we invest now, we will make a fortune, but I need to secure a loan of two million eight hundred thousand pesos.”

“What are you planning to use as collateral?” I asked calmly.

“Our house, sweetie,” Kenneth replied smoothy. “It might be under your name legally, but we are a married couple after all.”

Mrs. Gertrude chimed in immediately from the head of the dining table, “A good wife always supports her husband, Giselle, and you certainly wouldn’t want him to lose this life-changing opportunity out of silly mistrust.”

I told them both that I needed time to review the loan terms carefully, which prompted Kenneth to suddenly start bringing me breakfast in bed, washing all the dishes, and eagerly discussing a tropical vacation we had postponed for years. Yet the sweeter he acted, the louder that horrible sentence echoed in my head: “She always does whatever you ask.”

A few days later, I received a sudden verification call from the local bank regarding a preliminary application to mortgage my house. I went directly to the branch in person, where the loan advisor showed me a file containing a page with my full name and a forged signature that closely resembled mine.

“I never signed this document,” I declared firmly to the banker.

The advisor verified that the transaction had not been finalized, allowing me to submit a formal written refusal and instruct my attorney to investigate the forgery. While searching through our home filing cabinet for our marriage certificate later that night, I accidentally uncovered an old medical envelope dated six years ago, which contained Kenneth’s original fertility test results. The medical report clearly showed sperm metrics far below the reference range and explicitly recommended immediate specialist follow-up, proving he was never definitively sterile, but had actively required medical treatment.

“Why did you hide this from me for six years?” I confronted him directly in the hallway.

“I was just too embarrassed for my mother to find out,” Kenneth murmured quietly while staring at the floor.

“So you sat back and allowed her to humiliate and blame me for six straight years?” I asked, but he simply offered no response.
