My Future Son-in-Law Demanded $50,000—Then I Said, ‘You Forgot One Thing.’

Marcus immediately shouted that I was lying, but before he could say anything else, another voice came from behind the guests.

“Is she?”

Detective Miller stepped onto the beach with four uniformed officers.

“Marcus Evans, hands where I can see them.”

For the first time that day, Marcus looked genuinely afraid. Then, desperate to save himself, he shoved Lydia toward the officers and blamed everything on her.

“Tell them it was your idea!”

Lydia stared at him in disbelief.

“You said you loved me.”

Marcus’s charm disappeared completely.

“I needed a mark. You were just the easiest one.”

Within moments, officers restrained him and placed him under arrest while Lydia stood alone beside the altar. The wedding she had spent months creating had collapsed in front of everyone she had wanted to impress.

Then she turned toward me with tears running down her face.

“Mom, please. Help me. He tricked me.”

Part of me still wanted to rescue her. But I remembered the money, the ultimatum, and the moment she had called me nothing more than a bank.

“You wanted to be treated like a grown woman, Lydia. Grown women face consequences.”

And for the first time in her life, I let her face them.

Part 3: Learning to Stand Alone
Marcus was taken away while officers questioned Lydia about the money she had transferred into his companies. By evening, the four-million-dollar fantasy she had built was being dismantled piece by piece, with expensive flowers disappearing into garbage bags and workers removing the white silk pavilion from my beach.

Charles joined me on the balcony later and explained that Lydia had made bail, but the Manhattan apartment she shared with Marcus had been seized by federal investigators. With her accounts frozen, she suddenly had nowhere comfortable to go.

“Did she call?”

“Five times. She wants to come home. She kept asking for her mommy.”
