Dad Humiliated Me in Front of Everyone at My Sister’s Wedding.

Daniel whispered, “Who is that?”

I stood.

Adrian spotted me, and his stern expression softened briefly.

Then he walked directly down the aisle, passing stunned guests, the motionless wedding party, and my sister in her expensive white gown.

Dad stumbled upright.

“Mr. Cole. This is a private event.”

Adrian stopped beside him and leaned close.

Whatever he whispered drained the color from Dad’s face.

I couldn’t hear him, but I knew the words.

Richard, I own the debt now. And Emma owns the truth.

Dad gripped his chair.

“This is not the time.”

Adrian straightened.

“Actually, Richard, your daughter chose the time. I only brought the witnesses.”

Two lawyers entered behind him, followed by a uniformed process server and a woman from the state financial crimes unit.

I’d met the investigator three weeks earlier in a quiet downtown office.

Guests shifted uncomfortably.

Vanessa snapped, “Emma, what did you do?”

I stepped into the aisle.

My voice remained steady.

“I stopped being polite.”

Dad attempted to laugh, but his voice sounded strained.

“This is ridiculous. Emma has always been dramatic.”

I opened my clutch and took out the flash drive.

Vanessa stared at it.

For the first time in my life, my seemingly perfect sister looked frightened.

“These are the bank records,” I said. “The forged trust withdrawals. The shell invoices. The loan documents with my signature copied from an old tax form. And the transfer that paid the deposit for this wedding.”

Whispers spread throughout the ballroom.

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?”

“Nothing,” Vanessa hissed. “She’s jealous.”

Adrian raised his hand.

One attorney stepped forward and handed Daniel a folder.

Daniel opened it, his expression changing before he’d finished the second page.

I faced Vanessa.

“You told him your boutique was self-funded. You told him Dad gifted you money from business profits. You forgot to mention you helped steal from my trust.”

Vanessa lunged toward me, but Daniel caught her wrist.

“Is this real?”

She glanced at Dad.

That answered his question.

Dad slammed his hand against the table.

“You ungrateful little brat. Everything I did was for this family.”

“For your favorite daughter,” I said. “For your image. For your company. Not for me.”

The state investigator approached him.

“Richard Hale, we need you to come with us for questioning regarding financial fraud, identity theft, and misappropriation of trust assets.”

Mother gasped.

“Emma, please.”

I looked at her, feeling the familiar ache inside my chest begin to fade.
