My Husband Chose a Party Over Me—Three Days Later, He Was Speechless.

PART 1
The contraction hit so hard I nearly dropped the phone, but my husband’s voice was colder than the hospital floor beneath my feet. “Handle it yourself, Phoebe. Stop being so dramatic,” Rowan snapped—and then he hung up to attend his mother’s birthday dinner.

For three seconds, I stared at the dark screen, unable to understand what had just happened.

A nurse rushed toward me with a wheelchair while I fought another contraction. “Is someone coming?” she asked. I looked at the silent phone in my hand. “Not my husband,” I said.

I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant, alone in the maternity entrance, one hand gripping my belly while warm fluid soaked through my dress. Rowan had promised for months that he would be beside me. Instead, his mother, Selina, had decided her sixtieth birthday dinner was “a once-in-a-lifetime family event.”

Apparently, so was the birth of our son.

I called again. He answered with music and laughter behind him.

“Rowan, my water broke. The contractions are four minutes apart.”

Selina’s voice floated through the phone. “Tell her women have been giving birth for thousands of years.”

Rowan laughed. Then he said, “See? Mom gets it. Call a cab.”
