Rachel took her seat beside me, carrying three folders.
Mark reclined comfortably. “Are you finally prepared to be sensible?”
Rachel opened folder number one.
“Mr. Bennett, your disclosures omitted two bank accounts, you transferred $38,000 from marital savings, and approximately $27,000 was spent during your outside relationship.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Mark’s attorney murmured, “Are those figures accurate?”
“They’re being exaggerated.”
Rachel presented the supporting statements.
Next, she opened another folder.
“These documents suggest personal travel expenses were submitted to your employer as legitimate business costs.”

Rachel glanced toward me.

Mark examined the amount.
Vanessa murmured, “Seventy-three million dollars?”
Complete silence filled the room.
“You actually won?”
“One night before your return.”
His expression moved from disbelief to calculation, followed by an attempt at sudden affection.
“Claire, please listen. I made a terrible mistake. We can work things out.”

He paid her no attention.
I recalled every expense I had covered and every occasion when he dismissed my dreams as unrealistic.

Rachel explained evenly that my lottery claim had been fully and properly disclosed.
Not one dollar was concealed.
The court would apply state law to determine how the winnings, property, accounts, liabilities, and funds Mark had improperly used should be divided.
His undisclosed transfers remained relevant regardless of my newly acquired fortune.
His questionable expense claims mattered too.
Mark’s attorney requested a break.
By evening, Mark’s employer had placed him on administrative leave while conducting an independent review.
Within two weeks, his employment ended, and he was instructed to reimburse improperly claimed expenses.
Later, the divorce court accounted for significant marital waste in determining the property division and declined to enforce the unfair agreement he had pressured me to accept.
He nevertheless received everything legally owed to him.
Justice didn’t mean denying him his lawful rights.
