My Husband Tried to Control Me on Day Two of Our Marriage—But I Had a Different Plan.

I felt sick.

So this wasn’t simply an impulsive argument.

They’d discussed how he intended to treat me.

Perhaps they had even encouraged each other.

I looked toward Daniel.

He poured another cup of coffee.

Then said casually, “We also need to finish transferring your liquid assets into the joint financial arrangement.”

I kept my expression neutral.

“What arrangement?”

He paused.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Then Lorraine answered.

“The paperwork Daniel prepared. You know, for the marriage.”

I tilted my head.

“Oh. That paperwork.”

Daniel’s hand stopped moving.

“What do you mean?”

I looked directly at him.

“The documents you were reviewing in my office last night?”

Silence.

His expression tightened.

“You were watching me?”

“In my own office?” I asked.

Lorraine immediately intervened.

“Don’t turn this into an unnecessary drama.”

I looked at her.

“Did you know about the documents?”

She hesitated.

Daniel spoke before she could answer.

“We’re married now. What’s yours benefits both of us.”

I nodded slowly.

“Marriage doesn’t give you permission to forge my signature.”

His face went pale.

“What?”

“The authorization form. The one you accessed on my computer.”

He stared at me.

Then his voice hardened.

“You can’t prove anything.”

At that moment, the doorbell rang.

I checked the clock.

Nine-oh-two.

Right on schedule.

Daniel frowned.

“Who’s here?”

I stood.

“Someone who can help us clarify a few things.”

Rebecca entered carrying a leather folder.

Behind her was Marcus Hale, the chief financial officer of my investment firm.

Daniel immediately recognized him.

His expression changed.

“Marcus?”

“Good morning, Daniel.”

“Why are you here?”

Marcus looked toward me.

“Claire asked me to attend.”

Daniel frowned.

“You two know each other?”

I almost smiled.

“Very well.”

Rebecca sat at the kitchen table and opened her folder.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Daniel, our investment firm has suspended the proposed financing arrangement with Mercer Dynamics while serious due-diligence concerns are reviewed.”

Daniel stared at him.

“What?”

“The scheduled funding will not proceed as planned.”

“You can’t do that!”

Marcus remained calm.

“The decision was authorized by the firm’s controlling owner.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?”

I met his eyes.

“Me.”

The room became silent.

For a moment, Daniel simply stared.

Then he laughed nervously.

“Claire, don’t be ridiculous.”

Marcus continued.

“Claire owns seventy-two percent of the investment firm.”

Daniel stopped laughing.

I watched as he tried to process the information.

The investment fund he’d relied on for months.

The firm whose executives he had spent countless hours trying to impress.

The organization providing critical financial support to Mercer Dynamics.

It was controlled by the woman he’d slapped less than three hours earlier.

“You own the fund?” he whispered.

I nodded.

“And the company responsible for its investment decisions.”

Lorraine sank back into her chair.

Daniel glanced toward Marcus.

“But you never told me.”

I looked at him.

“You never asked who controlled the firm. You assumed I was simply a consultant whose career you could order me to abandon.”

His face reddened.

“This is insane.”

Rebecca spoke quietly.

“What’s concerning, Mr. Mercer, is the evidence of unauthorized access to confidential documents.”

She opened her folder.

Inside were copies of security logs, photographs, and the suspicious financial authorization.

Daniel stared at the documents.

Rebecca continued.

“We have preserved the recording showing you entering Claire’s office and accessing restricted materials.”

He swallowed.

“I’m her husband.”

“That doesn’t automatically authorize you to access protected accounts or sign documents on her behalf,” Rebecca replied.

I watched his confidence begin to crack.

Then Marcus added something worse.

“Mercer Dynamics has very limited operating cash. Without the anticipated financing, the company will need to address its obligations immediately.”

Daniel gripped the kitchen counter.

His company was already struggling.

He’d been relying on another investment round to keep operations running.

Now that funding was under review.

And he was facing serious questions about documents he’d attempted to obtain without my consent.

But there was more.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“You think you can ruin everything because of one argument?”

Rebecca immediately moved between us.

“Please keep your distance.”

He stopped.

I looked at him steadily.

“This stopped being an argument when you struck me.”

Lorraine threw up her hands.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake! Married couples disagree. Are you really going to destroy his career over one slap?”

I stared at her.

“One slap?”

She crossed her arms.

“You know what I mean.”

“No, Lorraine. I don’t think you understand.”

I took a breath.

“Your son assaulted me. He attempted to access my financial assets without authorization. And this morning, he informed me that I was no longer allowed to work or make my own decisions.”

Daniel looked away.

I continued.

“Those aren’t ordinary marital disagreements.”

Rebecca placed several documents on the table.

One concerned the legal steps being taken regarding Daniel’s permission to occupy my home.

Another addressed the suspension of the proposed financing agreement, subject to the relevant contractual provisions.

The third documented the suspected unauthorized access and attempted forgery for the appropriate investigation.

Daniel glanced from one page to another.

Then he shook his head.

“My board won’t believe any of this.”
