The next morning, we arrived at the elegant reception hall.
There were arrangements of white roses, enormous crystal chandeliers, and more than three hundred guests.
On the stage, a giant screen displayed photos of the couple.
Suddenly a recording appeared that I recognized immediately.
My wedding.
The moment the rotten eggs hit my dress.
Underneath, they had written a mocking caption: Chloe’s Most Famous Prank.
Some guests started cackling.
Chloe, wearing an outrageously expensive wedding gown, pointed at me from across the room.
“There she is, the star of my favorite video!”
Matthew squeezed my hand.
“Mom, do I have to stay quiet today too because I’m little?”
I knelt and straightened the bow tie on his shirt.
“You don’t have to accept anyone making fun of somebody. But remember, we shouldn’t hurt other people either.”
He looked at his box.
“So can I play a little?”
“You can play, but carefully.”
I never imagined he would interpret those words the way he did.
Minutes later, while Chloe was greeting guests, Matthew opened his box near the stage.
The toad hopped out in tiny leaps.
Chloe spotted it next to the train of her dress, let out a horrible scream, and jumped back so abruptly that she knocked a tray of drinks over her white skirt.
The entire ballroom froze.
“YOU LITTLE BRAT!” Chloe shrieked. “You ruined my wedding!”
Richard rushed toward us.
“Matthew, get over here right now!”
My son barely had time to step back.
Richard raised his hand to hit him.
I stepped in between.
The slap landed on my cheek.
I felt the sting and heard the absolute silence that followed.
“I told you to stop spoiling him!” Richard yelled at me. “Now you’re going to apologize and pay the fifteen thousand dollars!”
I looked at him steadily.
“Ten years ago, Chloe was twelve and you said she was too young to understand what she was doing. Matthew is nine. Why doesn’t he get the same forgiveness?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Then I took a small USB drive from my purse and looked at the sound technician.
“Please play this file.”
Chloe stopped screaming.
My mother-in-law went pale.
And when the first image appeared, Richard took a step back.
Because the recording didn’t show any prank by Matthew.
It showed what his own family had tried to hide for ten years.
Part 3
The screen lit up with images from our wedding ten years earlier.
But this time it didn’t show only my dress covered in eggs.
It showed Chloe preparing the confetti cannons, hiding the rotten eggs, and laughing as she explained to another girl how she planned to humiliate me.
Those images came from a complete recording that a venue employee had given me after our wedding. She had been outraged by what happened and had urged me to file a police report.
I had kept that copy for a decade.
Beverly also appeared, watching as Chloe tampered with the projection equipment.
“Won’t Marissa be mad?” someone asked.
My mother-in-law answered with a smile:
“Leave her alone. If she gets upset, I’ll calm her down. Chloe is still a child.”
I felt the silence in the room become unbearable.
For ten years I had believed my mother-in-law had simply defended Chloe after the fact. Now everyone could see she’d had chances to stop it and chose not to.
I did not allow the private footage from the dressing room to play. That part had been cut. I wasn’t going to expose my privacy again just to prove an injustice had been done.
Then a second recording began.
It was audio of our conversation from the day before.
Chloe’s voice rang out through every speaker:
“Marissa always ends up paying. My aunt knows how to convince Richard. We already got money out of her for college, so fifteen thousand dollars won’t be a problem.”
Her laugh could be heard too.
“Besides, we showed her that video again and she didn’t even defend herself. I can still do whatever I want with her!”
Ethan slowly turned to his fiancée.
“Chloe, what is this?”
She tried to snatch the microphone from the sound technician.
“Turn that garbage off! It’s all been tampered with!”
But Ethan had already seen enough.
“You told me your family had covered the wedding costs. My dad asked you three times if we had any outstanding debt.”
“Marissa was going to pay it!”
“Did she promise you that?”
Chloe was silent.
Beverly hurried over.
“Ethan, honey, don’t ruin a wedding over a spat between women.”
The groom’s mother rose from her table.
“A spat between women? Lying to my son about a fifteen-thousand-dollar debt is a spat between women?”
At that moment, the event coordinator appeared with a representative from the decorating company.
They were carrying copies of the contracts.
They explained that Chloe had signed as the party responsible for payment and that the balance had to be settled before certain contracted services could continue.
“Ms. Sanders, we need to resolve this immediately,” the coordinator said. “If you don’t, we’ll have to suspend the remaining services and apply the cancellation terms.”
Chloe started to cry.
“My cousin has tons of money! She can pay it!”
Everyone turned to look at me.
I took a deep breath.
“Yes, I can pay it,” I answered. “But I won’t.”
My mother-in-law clutched her chest.
