My mother-in-law expected me to clean her house. My husband threatened divorce when I refused. He wasn’t prepared for my response.

I held up my phone with the rental listing open.

“Finding out why a woman who is supposedly too sick to stay in her own home has a freshly painted condo that’s already rented to someone else starting Monday.”

Margaret instantly stopped looking frail.

Ethan went pale.

“Rachel, we can explain.”

I hadn’t even mentioned the deposit yet.

But judging by their faces, I could already tell there was more they didn’t want me to know.

PART 3

“Go ahead,” I said. “Explain.”

Ryan remained close to the entryway. The building manager stayed in the hall.

They weren’t there to threaten anyone.

I simply wasn’t going to have the conversation alone after Ethan had spent the evening ordering me around and threatening divorce.

Margaret pushed herself upright.

“I don’t know what that agent told you, but I have every right to rent out my own property.”

“Of course you do. The issue is that you rented it because you intended to move into mine without asking.”

Ethan gave a nervous laugh.

“Stop making this into something huge. Mom was only going to stay temporarily. You have three bedrooms.”

“The agent said indefinitely.”

Neither of them answered.

Margaret rolled her eyes.

“That woman talks too much.”

“No. She had to explain why the property was suddenly available.”

Ethan began pacing.

“Okay, yes, we talked about Mom staying here for a while. What’s the big deal? One room is your office and the other barely gets used.”

“My home does not contain spare rooms for plans the two of you make behind my back.”

“There you go again. It’s always ‘my home, my money.’”
