So, where in God’s name did this come from?
A terrifying, venomous thought slithered into the forefront of my mind, sinking its fangs into my sanity. Who was he with?
The realization that he was stepping out on me turned the blood in my veins to glacial ice. My hands began to tremble so violently that I nearly dropped the foil packet. I simply could not reconcile the image of the husband who walked through the door every evening, kissing my forehead and saying, “Honey, you work so hard to make this house a home,” with a man who would carry this tool of betrayal in his breast pocket.
I gripped the small square so tightly that the serrated edges of the plastic dug sharp, stinging crescents into my palm. My mind raced through frantic, desperate options. Should I storm out to the driveway, drive to his office, and scream the truth out of him? Should I wait by the front door like a predator and hurl it at his face the second he turned the key?
No. Neither.
What if I was losing my mind? What if this was a grotesque misunderstanding? Maybe he purchased it for a bachelor party gag gift? Maybe it was handed out as a promotional item at some sleazy downtown convention, and he mindlessly shoved it in his pocket? I frantically constructed fragile excuses, desperately trying to build a dam against the tsunami of grief rising in my chest.
Natalie was still so small. She needed her father. The sanctuary I had bled for ten years to construct could not be demolished in a single afternoon. I stood paralyzed in front of our walk-in closet for an eternity. When I finally forced myself to look into the full-length mirror, I didn’t recognize the woman staring back. Her face was the color of chalk, her eyes wide hollows of confusion and mounting terror.
I squeezed my eyes shut, inhaling a shuddering breath. “Anna, calm down,” I whispered to the empty room. “If you detonate right now, you walk away with nothing but ash. If he has truly betrayed you, there is absolutely no universe where he walks away unscathed. You must uncover the absolute truth.”
Operating like a highly functioning sociopath, I slipped the condom back into the hidden depths of his suit pocket, ensuring it sat exactly as I had found it. Then, as if the universe hadn’t just fractured beneath my feet, I picked up the iron. I pressed the heavy fabric, watching the hot steam billow up and hit my face, yet my entire body felt as though it were submerged in a frozen lake.
Who is she? And how much of my life is a lie?
Chapter 2: The Phantom in the Yellow Dress
That evening, Andrew arrived home precisely at six o’clock, carrying a massive, ostentatious bouquet of long-stemmed crimson roses. His smile was blindingly bright. “Happy tenth anniversary, honey!” he announced, kissing my cheek. “Let’s go out tonight. I’ve booked a table at Trattoria Rossi.”
If this had been twenty-four hours ago, I would have wept tears of overwhelming gratitude. But now, staring at the crinkling corners of his eyes, all I saw was a grotesque mask of hypocrisy.
I forced the corners of my mouth to lift, accepting the heavy bouquet. “That sounds wonderful. Let me go change.”
I pivoted, walked into our bedroom, and gently clicked the door shut. Leaning my spine against the cool wood, the dam finally broke. Hot, silent tears streamed down my cheeks, burning my skin. The man standing in my living room, loudly declaring his undying love to our daughter, was carrying the physical mechanism of his infidelity in the very suit I had pressed for him. This milestone anniversary was nothing but a colossal, humiliating farce.
Dinner was a masterclass in psychological torture. The expensive pasta tasted like wet cardboard. Andrew was in excessively high spirits, animatedly discussing his company’s quarterly projections, casually promising that next summer, he would take Natalie and me on a grand tour of Europe. I watched his lips move, watched him sip his expensive Barolo wine, but the only image projecting behind my eyes was that shiny foil wrapper. When was he planning to tear it open? And whose bed would he be in when he did?
