Derek turned toward me.
“You’ve been recording us?”
“Yes,” I answered. “Because nobody believed me when I tried to explain what was happening.”
His face darkened.
“You had no right!”
I looked at the bruises still visible above my hospital gown.
“And you had no right to put your hands around my neck.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Derek turned desperately toward Judge Price.
“Maren, you know my father. You know our family. Surely you aren’t going to let her destroy everything over a marital argument.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
“Mr. Vale, I strongly suggest you stop speaking about this case as though your wealth entitles you to special treatment.”
Detective Alvarez stepped closer.
“Derek Vale, we have a warrant for your arrest.”
My husband’s face went blank.
“An arrest warrant?”
“For offenses arising from the documented assaults and threats against your wife.”
Derek backed toward the wall.
“No. My attorneys will have this thrown out.”
“You may contact counsel after we complete the arrest,” Alvarez replied.
The officers moved toward him.
For the first time, Derek looked at me without the familiar certainty that he could frighten me into obedience.
But Arthur wasn’t finished.
He straightened his jacket and pointed toward the detective.
“You people have no idea what you’re doing. I have friends throughout this state, and I intend to use every connection I possess.”
Uncle Ray, who had been standing quietly beside Lily’s bassinet, finally turned toward him.
“Arthur,” he said, “that’s exactly what you said the last time you thought nobody could hold you accountable.”
My father-in-law went silent.
Then Detective Alvarez opened a second folder.
“Mr. Vale, before you leave, there’s something you should know about the financial investigation involving your family’s attorney.”
Arthur stared at the documents in her hand.
And the fear that returned to his face was even greater than when he’d recognized Uncle Ray’s lighter.
Part 4: My Billionaire Father-in-Law Threatened the Police—Then the Detective Revealed His Secret Payments
Arthur Vale stared at the folder in Detective Alvarez’s hands, his confidence disappearing as quickly as it had when he recognized Uncle Ray’s military lighter. For years, my father-in-law had behaved as though his money placed him beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Now two police officers were preparing to arrest his son, and a detective was asking questions about the family’s private financial dealings.
“What financial investigation?” Arthur demanded.
Detective Alvarez opened the folder.
“We’ve been reviewing payments connected to your family’s attorney, along with communications concerning your daughter-in-law’s custody case.”
Arthur straightened his jacket.
“My financial affairs are none of your business.”
“They become our business when there’s evidence of possible bribery and efforts to intimidate a witness.”
Derek looked at his father.
“Dad, what is she talking about?”
Arthur ignored him.
“I want my lawyer.”
“You’re entitled to contact counsel,” Alvarez replied. “But that doesn’t make the evidence disappear.”
She showed him copies of several transaction records and messages investigators had obtained. One payment appeared connected to a court employee, while another set of communications discussed pressuring medical professionals to describe me as emotionally unstable.
My stomach tightened as I recognized the language.
For months, Derek had threatened to convince a judge that I was incapable of caring for my daughter. I’d believed he was trying to frighten me, but the documents suggested his father had been helping him turn those threats into a plan.
“You were going to use my medical records against me?” I asked.
Arthur looked away.
Derek suddenly spoke.
“Maya, nobody was going to hurt you. We just wanted to make sure Lily was properly cared for.”
I stared at him.
“You threatened to have me hospitalized because I wouldn’t sign away my rights.”
“You’re twisting everything!”
Detective Alvarez stepped between us.
“Mr. Vale, you’ve been advised of your rights. We’re not continuing this argument.”
One officer secured Derek’s hands behind his back while the other collected his belongings.
My husband struggled against the humiliation.
“You can’t arrest me in front of my wife! I’m a partner at one of the biggest law firms in this state!”
Alvarez remained calm.
“Your occupation doesn’t exempt you from the law.”
The officers escorted him toward the door.
Before leaving, Derek turned toward me.
“This isn’t over, Maya. My attorneys will fix everything.”
I held Lily closer, but I didn’t lower my eyes.
“For once, Derek, you’ll have to answer for what you’ve done.”
His expression changed. He seemed genuinely surprised that I was no longer begging him to calm down.
Then the officers led him into the hallway.
Arthur watched his son disappear before turning back toward Judge Price.
“Maren, we’ve known each other for twenty years. Surely you understand that this family is being targeted.”
The judge’s face remained serious.
“Arthur, our acquaintance cannot protect you from an investigation. Any matter involving me will be handled through the proper procedures.”
Detective Alvarez closed her folder.
“Mr. Vale, investigators will be contacting your attorney. You’re also being directed not to interfere with witnesses or evidence.”
Arthur looked toward Uncle Ray.
For a moment, I thought he might threaten him again.
Instead, he quietly asked, “Did you arrange all this?”
Ray adjusted one of his hearing aids.
“No, Arthur. Maya did the hard part. She found the courage to tell the truth.”
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
For years, I’d thought of myself as someone who needed protecting. But I’d spent months preserving evidence, meeting with an advocate, and cooperating with investigators while trying to keep my unborn daughter safe.
Ray had helped me stand my ground, but he hadn’t made those decisions for me.
Arthur looked at Lily, then at the marks around my neck.
He seemed to search for something to say, but Detective Alvarez interrupted.
“It’s time for you to leave, Mr. Vale.”
He walked out without another word.
When the door finally closed, the hospital room fell silent.
A nurse came in to check Lily, and the social worker I’d spoken with earlier arrived to discuss additional safety measures. Arrangements were made to restrict visitors and move us to a more secure room.
Only then did I begin to shake.
