Mom shoved two black garbage bags into my hands.
“You were Grandpa’s responsibility,” she said. “Now that he’s gone, this house belongs to us.”

And to ensure you wouldn’t waste court time claiming undue influence, he had his competency evaluated and certified by two independent medical examiners before signing his last will and testament.”
Richard stepped into the center of the foyer, looking at the moving crew who were currently standing near the front entrance, holding a velvet armchair.
“Gentlemen,” Richard said, addressing the movers directly. “I suggest you put that chair down and step outside. You are currently trespassing on private property.”
The movers exchanged quick looks, set the armchair down immediately, and practically jogged out the front door, leaving the moving truck idling in the driveway.
“You can’t do this!” Arthur shouted, his face turning red. “We are his biological children! Under state law, his estate defaults to us!”
“Your biological obligation ended seventeen years ago when you left a five-year-old child on this porch with two suitcases and never came back,” Richard said, his tone cutting through Arthur’s anger like a knife.

“No!” Chloe shrieked, taking a furious step toward me. “That’s impossible! This house is worth over a million dollars! You can’t leave everything to her! She’s just a leech who lived off his pension!”
I finally looked up, meeting my sister’s eyes with the calm strength Grandpa had spent seventeen years instilling in me.
