My three-year-old made an innocent comment at her pool party. Everyone laughed until I looked closer. Then everything changed.

Then the embarrassment hit me.

I hurried over, gently lowered Ariel’s pointing hand, and told her it wasn’t polite to point at someone’s stomach.

“Come on, sweetheart,” I said, trying to guide her back toward the other kids.

But Ariel planted her feet.

Her little face tightened.

“But DADDY’S IN THERE! You have to save him!”

A few people laughed again, but this time the laughter sounded confused.

Glen was standing nearby, watching the whole thing with a helpless shrug.

I pointed directly at him.

“Sweetheart, Daddy is standing right here. See?”

Ariel looked at Glen.

Then she looked back at Clara.

And suddenly, she started CRYING.

Not the dramatic crying she sometimes did when she wanted another scoop of ice cream. This was different. She looked genuinely frightened and frustrated, and that was the moment the whole thing stopped feeling funny.
