For six years, I lived without answers. Then my daughter found her father’s old phone.

No answer.

At 7:30, I called our oldest son.

Just ringing.

By 8:00, I was annoyed.

By 9:00, I was scared.

At 10:15, I called the police.

The next morning, Daniel’s truck was found near the marina.

The empty boat trailer was still attached.

His wallet was inside the truck.

So were two jackets.

The boat was found several hours later on the opposite shore, completely empty and badly damaged.

Search teams spent weeks combing the area with divers, boats, helicopters, and volunteers walking the shoreline.

They came up empty.

No sign of Daniel.

No sign of the boys.

Eventually, the official conclusion became the only answer anybody could give me.

Boating accident.

Strong current.

Bodies likely carried away.

I nodded when people said it.

Signed paperwork.

Then went home to three daughters and four empty places at the table.

But one question never stopped scratching at me.

How?

Daniel was careful.

Painfully careful.

If the forecast looked bad, he canceled.

If equipment needed repair, the trip waited.

If one of the boys forgot a life jacket, Daniel would have driven all the way home before launching without it.

So how did a man like that take all three of our sons onto a lake and never bring any of them back?
