My mother turned my kids away from a family dinner. I quietly left, but she soon realized what she’d lost after eleven years.

“Daddy’s coming,” Derek said. “You’re going to be okay.”

Travis stepped backward, trying to put himself between them again.

“Stay where you are.”

Derek pointed toward Noah without taking his eyes off Travis.

“Move away from him.”

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then Travis made a choice.

He reached toward the hallway.

Derek reacted immediately—not by attacking him, but by stepping between Travis and the child.

“Don’t.”

Travis stopped.

The sirens arrived a few seconds later.

Two police vehicles turned onto the street, followed by an ambulance. Travis looked toward the front window, then back at Derek.

His entire posture changed.

The man who had threatened a four-year-old suddenly looked like someone trying to calculate how much of the situation could still be explained away.

Officers came through the front gate.

“Step away from the doorway!” one of them shouted.
