My mother fed a homeless man for 20 years. After her funeral, he revealed a secret she’d asked him to keep.

“How did you end up behind our house?”

He almost smiled. “Your mother found me asleep in the alley by the bus depot. She was coming off a double shift at the hospital. She didn’t give me a speech or ask what I’d done. She handed me half a sandwich and said, ‘There’s a spot behind my house where the wind doesn’t hit as hard.’”

She didn’t want you to feel indebted to the man behind the house, or ashamed of how you’d gotten out. She said you should walk across that stage believing you’d earned every inch of it.”

“I did earn it,” I said hoarsely.

“You did. The foundation never told you what to study or where to live. It only paid the bills. You did everything else.” He swallowed. “That’s why she begged me to stay silent. Not because she was ashamed of me, Dana. Because she wanted you proud of yourself.”

I cried then, the ugly kind, the kind I hadn’t let myself do at the funeral. Vernon didn’t hug me or tell me it was all right. He sat beside me and let me, the way my mother used to.

When I could speak, I asked, “Why are you telling me now?”

“Because she’s gone, and I think I owe you the truth more than I owe her the promise.” He looked down at the locket. “And because of the last thing she said to me. “What about this house?”

I stared at it.

“I can’t just take a house.”

“You’re not taking it. Your mother paid for it, every month, for twenty years, with meals and kindness she never let me repay.” His eyes were wet again. “Let me finally pay her back, Dana. Please.”

I didn’t answer right away. I turned the locket over and found a tiny scratch near the clasp, one I remembered from childhood, when she’d let me hold it during thunderstorms.
