My family thought they had taken everything from me. But one legal decision changed everything.

Chapter 5: The Confession
I sat on the edge of the bed and let it ring three times before I calmly picked up the receiver.

“Hello?”

“Lenora!”

It was my father. He was absolutely hysterical. The polished, arrogant, heavily curated executive baritone was entirely gone, replaced by the frantic, high-pitched screech of a cornered animal.

“What did you do?!” Roland screamed into the phone, his breath ragged. “Why are corporate investigators tearing my office apart like I’m a common criminal? Human Resources escorted me out of the building! You are ruining my life over a simple family misunderstanding!”

I reached out and pressed the flashing red ‘Record’ button on the hotel console.

“A misunderstanding?” My voice was utterly icy, a stark contrast to his unhinged panic. “You stole my United States passport. You stole my phone. You stranded me in a foreign country. And you attempted to steal one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from my accounts.”

In the background, I could hear Sibil screeching. “Tell her to withdraw the complaint, Roland! Tell her she deserves it for being such a selfish, ungrateful brat!”

Then came Maragold’s shrill, whining voice overlapping Sibil’s. “My realtor just called! The escrow bounced! Lenora, you’re ruining my life! I already announced the house tour on my channel! I need that condo more than you need money sitting in a stupid bank!”

My father barked into the phone, trying to regain his shattered authority. “You brought this entirely on yourself, Lenora! You sit in your ivory tower and you never share your wealth with your own sister. We had to take matters into our own hands to ensure family fairness. Now, you will call HR, you will fix this, before I lose my board seat permanently!”

I let silence hang on the line for a long, agonizing moment. Let him steep in his own delusions.
