They walked away believing I had nothing left. They never expected the legal step I’d already taken.

The vast expanse of the lobby floor, carved from imported Italian marble, was freezing against my bare soles. The scent of roasting coffee beans and rich pastries wafted from the cafe, a jarringly normal aroma in a reality that had just tilted off its axis.

I approached the front desk. The concierge, a sharply dressed young man with a brass name tag, looked up. His practiced, professional smile faltered, melting into a look of deep, genuine concern as he took in my disheveled state.

“Ma’am? Are you alright? Do you need medical assistance?” he asked, his accent thick and polite.

I leaned against the cool granite counter. “I need you to tell me exactly where the occupants of Penthouse Four are.”

He frowned, his fingers flying across his keyboard. He stared at the glowing screen for a moment, his brow furrowing. He hesitated, looking back up at me with pity.

“Señora… the rest of your party checked out of the resort at four o’clock this morning. They requested a private, expedited car service directly to the international airport in Liberia.”

I swallowed the dry lump in my throat. “Please pull up the manifest for my return flight. Lenora Vance.”

He typed for a few more seconds. As he read the data, the color completely drained from his face. He slowly looked up, meeting my eyes with a grim expression.

“Señora Vance. Your ticket was officially canceled at four-fifteen this morning. The cancellation was authorized by the primary cardholder who booked the itinerary… a Mr. Roland Vance.”

They had not merely left me behind after a family squabble. They had meticulously trapped me. They had coordinated the theft of my government identification, severed my only line of communication, and destroyed my transportation. They had abandoned me in a foreign jurisdiction, thousands of miles from my jurisdiction, with absolutely nothing but a cotton shirt to my name.

They thought I was the wounded gazelle. They thought they had constructed the ultimate, inescapable snare to finally punish me for the crime of my independence.

What they failed to realize was that they hadn’t trapped a victim. They had just initiated a war with a woman who dismantles empires for a living.
