I smiled back at my eldest daughter, realizing once again that she possessed far more wisdom than most adults.
By the time the sun began setting the following evening, that fancy tablet would be the least important thing inside our home.
Maisie’s twelfth birthday backyard barbecue turned out to be an absolute joy for all of us. All seven of my children were gathered in the yard together, surrounded by dozens of cheerful school friends and friendly neighbors from down the road.
When I finally pulled the heavy sheet off the restored cherry-wood desk on the patio, Maisie let out an ear-piercing scream of joy.
“DAD! YOU ACTUALLY FINISHED THE DESK FOR ME!” she shouted, throwing her arms around my neck with enough force to knock me off balance.
“Unless you would rather have another package of plain white cotton socks,” I joked, squeezing her tightly.
“This beautiful desk is a million times better than any silly tablet could ever be!”
“You really do not have to say that just to make your old man feel good, Maisie.”
“I am not saying it for you, Dad, I am saying it because I love it so much!”
She ran her fingers over the smooth wood with sheer delight. “Can we carry it upstairs into my bedroom tonight?“
“Right after the party winds down, I promise.”
“Promise me for real?”
“I promise you for real, Maisie.”
She beamed proudly. “Then I am going to sit right here and do all my homework tomorrow afternoon, even the hard algebra problems.”
“Now that is what I call a truly serious compliment,” I laughed.
Just as the kids were cutting the chocolate cake, a loud knock rattled our front door, drawing curious looks from our guests. I wiped my hands on an apron and walked inside to pull the front door open.
Brenda stood directly on the porch steps wearing an expensive cream designer coat, enormous sunglasses, and gold jewelry that caught the afternoon light. Craig stood right behind her, shifting awkwardly on his feet while holding several bright glossy shopping bags.
“Thomas! Surprise!” Craig announced with an uncomfortable, rehearsed grin.
“How did you even know about Maisie’s birthday party today?” I asked, keeping my body firmly in the doorway.
“Hannah posted a lovely public announcement on social media, and I decided it was high time for a family reunion,” Brenda stated smoothly.
“A family reunion after ten completely silent years?”
“People evolve and mature, Thomas, and besides, the public absolutely loves a heartwarming reunion story.”
“What do you really want here, Brenda?”
“I came to visit my sweet daughter on her special day, which is surely allowed by any reasonable father.”
“You have not visited or called her once in ten years,” I reminded her, my jaw tightening.
“Must we really drag up old unpleasant history right in the middle of her celebration?” Brenda asked, brushing past me into the living room without waiting for an invitation.
She paused in the center of the room, looking around with visible disdain. “Goodness gracious, you are still keeping the exact same old furniture in here!”
“Some people in this world prefer keeping things that have real value and history,” I replied coldly.
“Craig, bring the luxury gift bags inside right now,” Brenda ordered, completely ignoring my words.
Maisie suddenly walked in from the kitchen holding a paper plate with two slices of birthday cake. She stopped dead in her tracks, the color draining from her cheeks as she stared at the glamorous woman standing near our couch.
“Mom?” Maisie whispered, her voice barely audible over the chatter outside.
Brenda flashed a polished, dazzling smile. “Hello, my darling sweetheart!”
For several long seconds, Maisie stood completely paralyzed, clutching the paper plate against her chest.
Brenda stepped forward and wrapped Maisie in a stiff, perfume-scented embrace that felt entirely unnatural. “Just look at how gorgeous you have grown up to be, darling! You definitely inherited my eyes and facial structure.”
“You have not seen me since I was two years old,” Maisie said, stepping backward out of the hug.
“Well, adult life can get terribly complicated sometimes, sweetie.”
Maisie looked down at the bright shopping bags Craig had set on the floor. “Are you planning to stay for my birthday party?”
“Of course I am staying, my precious girl!” Brenda beamed.
“Are you staying for the entire party with everyone?”
Brenda adjusted her sunglasses onto her head. “We will just have to see how the afternoon flows, darling.”
Maisie nodded quietly, doing her absolute best to swallow the immediate wave of disappointment rising in her throat.
“Will you come back to visit me again tomorrow morning?” Maisie asked timidly.
“Let us not rush ahead and make rigid plans just yet, darling.”
“But you know where we live now, so you could visit anytime,” Maisie pointed out.
“Of course I know where you live, dear,” Brenda replied vaguely, waving her manicured hand.
Maisie glanced toward me with troubled eyes, then quietly took another step away from her mother.
Craig reached into the largest bag and wheeled out a shiny, top-tier bicycle while Brenda presented Maisie with a sleek, gold-wrapped box containing the newest high-end digital tablet.
“Thank you,” Maisie whispered politely, holding the box with limp fingers.
“See, darling?” Brenda cooed loudly, turning toward the backyard where guests were watching. “Mommy knows exactly what a special girl deserves, and I can finally give you the luxurious things your father never could afford.”
“Brenda, that is quite enough out of your mouth,” I warned, stepping directly between them.
Maisie looked over toward the patio doors. “Dad made that cherry-wood study desk out there completely by hand for me.”
“That is very sweet of him, darling, but now you hold something far better in your hands,” Brenda said dismissively.
“Better?” Maisie repeated, her tone suddenly hardening.
“Something high-class that you actually deserve to own.”
The faint smile on Maisie’s face vanished entirely, replaced by a cold resolve that startled me. She pulled her smartphone out of her back pocket, her fingers moving quickly across the glass screen.
“Mom, can I show you an interesting video I stumbled across on the internet last month?” Maisie asked.
I assumed Maisie was about to show her mother an old childhood photograph from our digital album. Instead, she cracked open a massive secret Brenda had been hiding from the entire world.
“Do your hundreds of thousands of online followers know who we are?” Maisie asked, turning the glowing screen toward Brenda’s face to display an Instagram profile with huge numbers.
“People simply adore my luxury travel lifestyle, darling, which is why my following is growing,” Brenda replied smoothly.
“On this video here, you told an interviewer that having children completely ruins a woman’s youth and personal freedom.”
“I was obviously speaking in broad philosophical terms for modern career women,” Brenda stammered.
“And right here, you said that escaping domestic responsibilities is the only true secret to staying young.”
“That is simply lifestyle advice curated for my target audience, Maisie!”
“Do any of your wealthy followers know that you actually gave birth to seven children?” Maisie asked firmly.
“My personal private life belongs to me alone,” Brenda hissed, her smile beginning to crack around the edges.
“Then why did you set up your smartphone to livestream my birthday party the moment you walked through the door?”
Brenda froze, her polished composure instantly shattering into visible panic. “I only wanted to share our beautiful, tearful mother-daughter reunion with my loyal fans!”
“Did you bother telling your fans that you completely abandoned all seven of us when I was just a baby?”
“They do not need to know every single messy detail of our past, Maisie!”
“So you just came here today so people online would think you were an amazing, loving mother?”
“Maisie, shut your mouth and do not ruin this opportunity for me!” Brenda shrieked.
I spun around toward the corner table near the front entrance. Brenda’s expensive gold smartphone was propped upright against a ceramic vase, its wide-angle camera aimed directly at Maisie, the gifts, and the living room.
A bright red glowing dot on the screen clearly read: LIVE.
“You came into my home and set up a hidden camera to broadcast my children for internet clout?” I roared, my fury breaking through ten years of silence.
“It is great content for my lifestyle brand, Thomas!”
Maisie snatched the phone off the table before Brenda could grab it, aiming the front lens right at her own face.
“Sophie, stop touching my property right this second!” Brenda lunged forward.
