“Hello to everyone watching Mom’s video right now,” Maisie spoke clearly and steadily into the microphone. “My name is Maisie, and my mother abandoned me when I was two years old along with my six brothers and sisters.”
Comments began racing up the screen at dizzying speeds.
A user named @TravelQueen wrote: “Wait, she actually has SEVEN abandoned children?!”
Another named @MarkusB responded: “She told her entire audience she lived a child-free independent life!”
“How dare you embarrass me, you ungrateful little brat?!” Brenda screamed at the top of her lungs, her face contorting with rage.
PART 2
I had stayed completely silent for ten long years to keep peace in our home. Seeing Brenda scream venomously into the face of our twelve-year-old daughter proved that the time had come to teach her a lesson she would never recover from.
“Get your hands away from my daughter right now!” I barked, stepping between Brenda and Maisie with a look that made Brenda flinch backward.
“This pathetic little house is exactly why I had to run away ten years ago!” Brenda shouted hysterically. “Seven needy, demanding children and not a single shred of personal freedom for me!”
Craig grabbed Brenda’s arm, his face pale with horror as he stared at the phone screen. “Brenda, my corporate business associates follow your page, and some of them might be watching this disastrous broadcast right now!”
“Craig, let go of me, this is about my brand!”
“You are dragging my business reputation straight into the gutter!” Craig yelled back, his polished composure completely ruined.
I took the phone gently from Maisie’s trembling hands and pressed the red button, instantly terminating the live broadcast.
“Take your things and get out of my home immediately, Brenda,” I commanded, pointing toward the open front door.
“You deliberately coached that child to ambush me on camera!” Brenda accused, her chest heaving under her designer coat.
“She is twelve years old, Brenda, and the only reason you are furious is because she spoke the unvarnished truth about what you did to this family.”
Hannah walked into the room from the backyard, flanked by Luke and the rest of our older children, all of them standing shoulder to shoulder with cold, unyielding expressions.
“Leave our house, Mom,” Hannah said quietly. “None of us want you here.”
Brenda snatched her designer purse off the sofa, glaring at every single one of us with pure hatred. “Every single one of you will live to regret embarrassing me like this!”
Craig was already hurrying down the gravel walkway toward his luxury sedan without waiting for her.
“Craig! Get back here and back me up!” Brenda shrieked through the screen door.
Craig looked back over his shoulder with sheer disgust. “You have said far more than enough to ruin both of us today, Brenda.”
I thought the ugly confrontation would end right there on our front lawn, but I was completely mistaken about how low Brenda was willing to sink.
After the birthday guests had cleared out and the younger kids were tucked into bed, I found Maisie sitting quietly in the dark beside her cherry-wood desk.
“Dad, I ruined my own birthday party and made a terrible mess,” Maisie sniffled, pulling her sleeves over her hands.
“You did not ruin anything, sweetheart,” I said gently, pulling up a wooden chair beside her.
“I just wanted Mom to see that we were happy and that everything you gave us was special, but she looked at our home like it was completely worthless.”
“How long have you known about her social media account, Maisie?”
“About three months now,” she confessed, wiping her cheeks. “Luke showed me a video by accident when he saw her face on an advertisement.”
“Why did you keep that heavy secret to yourself for so long?”
“She looked so incredibly happy traveling to glamorous hotels all over the world, Dad, and I kept wondering why she could not be happy living here with us.”
I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight. “Her selfish choices were never your fault or your burden to carry, Maisie. While you should not have started a fight online, every cruel word that came out of her mouth today was her own doing.”
Maisie pulled up Brenda’s profile once more, showing me a sponsored video where Brenda was praising a high-end luxury furniture line.
“I know that furniture manufacturer very well,” I remarked, looking closely at the polished oak credenza in the clip. “I used to do master restoration work for their flagship showroom down in Madison, and I still keep in touch with their chief marketing executive, Warren.”
“Does that help us somehow, Dad?”
“It might give us some leverage if things get out of hand, sweetheart.”
Before I could even figure out the right course of action, Brenda made a devastating mistake that went far beyond anything she had screamed during the party.
Early the following morning, my phone buzzed incessantly on the kitchen counter until Hannah’s anxious voice filled the speaker.
“Dad, have you checked Mom’s profile this morning?” Hannah asked, her voice trembling with anger.
“No, I have been sanding table legs in the workshop since dawn, so what happened now?”
“She posted a heavily edited response video claiming you brainwashed all of us into hating her and that you staged Maisie’s breakdown to extort money from her!”
“She cannot possibly be serious,” I muttered, setting my sandpaper down on the workbench.
“She called Maisie a coached liar and claimed you have been abusing our minds for a decade!”
For ten long years, I had maintained total silence to shield my innocent children from adult wickedness and public gossip. I suddenly realized that my silence was no longer protecting my children, but was instead serving as a protective shield for a monster like Brenda.
Luke called my workshop phone just minutes later, his voice laced with pure determination.
“Are you going to sit back and let her slander Maisie in front of millions of strangers?” Luke demanded.
“No, son, I am finally going to show the entire world the absolute truth about who raised this family.”
“You are really ready to go after Mom publicly?”
“I am standing up to defend my daughter’s honor, Luke, and there is a massive difference between revenge and protection.”
“Tell me what you need, Dad, and I will get Hannah and the others ready immediately.”
An hour later, my older children gathered around the sturdy oak kitchen table to plan our response.
“We need to keep Maisie completely off-camera,” Hannah insisted firmly. “She has suffered enough emotional trauma from this already.”
“I agree completely,” I said, looking around at my children. “Maisie stays out of this battle, and this will be our story to tell.”
“What if Mom files a frivolous lawsuit against you for damaging her brand?” Luke asked, leaning forward on his elbows.
“Then she can go right ahead and explain her abandoned children to a court of law, because the truth is on our side.”
“Are you afraid of the massive public backlash this might bring to your workshop, Dad?”
“I would rather lose every penny I have ever earned than let Maisie believe for one second that her father was too cowardly to stand up for her.”
We spent the afternoon digging through old dusty photo albums, verifying dates on dusty legal files, and pulling old receipts from the workshop’s earliest days.
“Let us open the video with photographs of when we were little kids sleeping in bunk beds,” Hannah suggested, organizing prints on the table.
“And let us document how you worked three jobs around the clock to keep the bank from taking our home,” Luke added, setting up a tripod and camera.
“We should show the furniture shop too,” I said quietly. “People need to see that an honest living built with our own hands has real dignity.”
We arranged photographs showing school graduations, little league games, burnt birthday cakes, and the custom furniture I had built for every single child over the years.
I sat down in front of the camera, placing my rough, scarred hands directly on the cherry-wood desk I had built for Maisie.
Hannah took her turn speaking clearly into the lens first.
“Our father never once told us to hate our mother, nor did he ever speak an unkind word about her in our presence,” Hannah stated calmly. “He simply poured every drop of his love into making sure we never felt discarded.”
Luke spoke next, looking straight into the camera with quiet dignity.
