My MIL ignored my request and appeared at my son’s school. I tried to keep the morning peaceful. Then his teacher told me something unexpected.

For weeks, my mother-in-law kept insisting that I had chosen the wrong school for my son.
Every time I asked why, she gave me the same vague answer.

“It just isn’t the right place for Ethan.”

I thought she was being controlling.

On the morning of his first day, I finally discovered the real reason she had been so desperate to stop him from going.

The night before Ethan started school, Kayla and I had one of our worst arguments in years.

She stood in my kitchen with her purse hanging from one shoulder while I labeled my six-year-old son’s lunchbox.

“You still have time to change your mind,” she said.

I didn’t even look up.

“Ethan starts tomorrow. We’re not changing schools.”

“He can still start tomorrow. Just somewhere else.”

I finally looked at her.

“You expect me to find another school overnight?”

“There are other good ones. I can give you a list.”

I set the marker down.

“We’ve already discussed this several times.”

“And you still haven’t listened to me.”

“I listened. You just never gave me an actual reason.”

Her eyes moved toward my husband, Luke.

He was standing near the counter with his arms folded.

That immediately irritated me.

Every time Kayla brought up Ethan’s school, she looked at Luke as if she expected him to support her.

He never did.

But he also never told her to stop.

“This is one of the best schools in the area,” I said.

Kayla sighed.

“That isn’t the issue.”

“Then what is?”

Again, she looked at Luke.

He looked away.

My patience disappeared.

“Seriously, Kayla. Give me one real reason why Ethan shouldn’t go there.”

She tightened her grip on her purse.

“It just isn’t right for him.”

“That is not a reason.”

“I’m trying to help.”

“No. You’re trying to make a parenting decision that isn’t yours.”
