A Seven-Year-Old Walked Into the Police Station Carrying a Secret… No One Expected Where She Had Hidden It.

“Daddy put something inside my sister’s belly,” a seven-year-old girl told the desk officer. Then she clarified, “He made her swallow it and said not to tell.” Her twin curled around her stomach while the first girl produced an empty medicine syringe hidden inside her shoe. The officer called an ambulance and entered the pharmacy code into his computer. When their father’s name appeared as the prescriber, he quietly locked the station doors.

The rain had started just before four, tapping against the front windows of the police station in quick, nervous bursts.

Inside, the air smelled like burnt coffee, wet pavement, and the dusty heat of an old box fan turning behind the front desk.

Officer Daniel Reed was finishing a parking report when the glass doors opened and two little girls stepped inside holding hands.

They looked so much alike that, for one second, Daniel assumed they were simply dressed for the weather in matching gray hoodies, jeans, and worn sneakers.

Then he noticed that one of them was bent forward.

She kept one arm wrapped around her stomach and leaned into her sister with every step.

The other girl walked straight to the desk.

“Can you help us?” she asked.

Daniel pushed his chair back and stood.

“Of course,” he said. “Are you here with a grown-up?”

The girl shook her head.

Her name was Emma.

She pointed to her twin and said, “That’s Olivia. Daddy put something inside her belly.”

Daniel came around the desk slowly, careful not to crowd them.

“What do you mean by put something inside her belly?”

Emma swallowed.

“He made her swallow it,” she said. “He said it would make her good. He said not to tell.”

Olivia lowered herself to the floor beside the counter and curled around her stomach.

Daniel’s training told him to ask simple questions and avoid giving the children words they had not used.

His instincts told him not to waste a second.

He crouched several feet away and asked Olivia whether she could breathe.

She nodded.

He asked whether she knew what she had swallowed.

She shook her head.

Emma looked down at her own right shoe.

Then she sat, pulled the sneaker off, and lifted the loose insole with two fingers.
