I came home from work and knew something was wrong. I quietly picked up my son and walked away. By sunrise, I realized there was much more to uncover.

I was returning for our son’s things, not to bring our son back to him, and for once my husband would not be allowed to control which version of that morning each of us was supposed to believe.

That choice had begun hours before, at 6:14 a.m., when I returned from a night shift expecting nothing more eventful than a shower, some coffee, and perhaps twenty peaceful minutes before everyone else in the house woke up.
