PART 1
Stepping into the first-class cabin of the chartered jet, I froze. My usual seat next to my husband, Rowan, was occupied by Selina, his new secretary. She was leaning intimately forward, playfully feeding him a peeled orange.
Spotting my shadow, Selina performed a theatrical gasp. She deliberately dropped the orange onto Rowan’s thigh and began frantically, provocatively rubbing it. “Oh! I’m so sorry, Mr. Vance…”
Instead of pushing her away, Rowan looked at me with icy annoyance. “What are you standing there for? Selina gets severe airsickness. I told her to sit here. Go back to row five.”
I stood paralyzed in front of his entire executive board. My mother-in-law chimed in from behind, her voice dripping with venom: “Phoebe, please. The girl was up until 3 AM working for Rowan. Be considerate and give up your seat.”
In the eyes of everyone on this aircraft, Rowan was a self-made tech titan, and I was just the useless, wealthy socialite wife.
They had no idea that when his startup faced a catastrophic crisis, I secretly wired 1.5 billion dollars from my family’s trust to save him. I secured the thirteen core patents that built his empire. I treated my endless concessions as love. He treated them as his divine right.
Rowan glared at me. “Phoebe, must you make a scene in front of my team? Remember your place.”
The last thread of my four-year martyrdom snapped. I took a slow step backward, a terrifyingly serene smile touching my lips.
“I know exactly what my place is, Rowan,” my voice was smooth as glass. “And I have absolutely no intention of fighting over a seat.”
I turned my back and headed for the exit. They smugly thought I was walking away in defeat. But they didn’t know I wasn’t just walking off the plane.
I was about to push the detonator and obliterate his entire universe…
PART 2
My heels clicked against the floor with a crisp, lethal rhythm as I walked out of the first-class cabin. Behind me, Rowan’s voice chased after me, dropping into his habitual, confident threat:
“Phoebe! If you walk out of that cabin door today, do not expect me to drive to the Sterling estate and beg you to come back like last time!”
His arrogance was laughable. He genuinely believed I was throwing a tantrum, terrified of losing the title of “Mrs. Vance.”
I stepped out onto the jet bridge. By the cockpit, the Captain looked up. The moment he saw my face, his relaxed posture vanished. He snapped to attention, beads of sweat forming on his brow, and bowed deeply. “Miss Sterling.”
Yes, this chartered flight was paid for by Rowan’s company. But the private aviation charter line that owned it was controlled by my family’s empire, the Sterling Group. And I was the sole legal heir. I was the true shot-caller of the metal tube my husband was sitting in.
I gave a thin, cold smile. “Let them depart. But do not report my movements to Vance’s team.”
“Understood completely, Miss Sterling!”
Thirty minutes later, I was seated in the cavernous back of a black Cadillac Escalade, my eyes cold.
“George,” I addressed my longtime driver. “Take me to the Sterling Group headquarters. And call Chief Attorney Davis.”
“Did something happen, Miss Sterling?”
“Yes. Tell him I need the ENTIRE elite litigation team waiting in my office at exactly two o’clock this afternoon.”
And just like that, the hunt officially began…
PART 3
At 2:00 PM, I sat at the head of the dark mahogany boardroom table on the top floor of the Sterling Tower. Twelve senior attorneys, forensic auditors, and intellectual property experts sat in total silence as I unsealed a heavy velvet binder.
“For four years,” I spoke, my voice echoing across the room, “I allowed Rowan Vance to use my family’s capital, patent licenses, and private credit lines under a joint spousal loan structure.”
Chief Attorney Davis opened his tablet, his eyes sharpening. “Miss Sterling, the spousal clause attached to the 1.5 billion dollar emergency injection states that if Rowan Vance commits a material breach of good faith—or public moral turpitude—the principal loan matures immediately within twenty-four hours.”
“Issue the recall notice,” I commanded flatly. “Recall the 1.5 billion dollars. Revoke his licensing rights to the thirteen core software patents held by my family’s foundation. And file for an immediate emergency freeze on all joint corporate liquidity accounts.”
Attorney Davis smiled—a predator recognizing a hunt. “Consider it done, Miss Sterling.”
Meanwhile, 35,000 feet in the air, Rowan was holding court in the first-class lounge, sipping vintage champagne with Selina curled up beside him, boasting to his board members about his upcoming regional expansion.
Suddenly, the satellite Wi-Fi system on the jet began chiming frantically.
Rowan’s Chief Financial Officer turned pale as he stared at his laptop screen. “Mr. Vance… our corporate credit lines just collapsed!”
Rowan frowned, waving a dismissive hand. “Nonsense. Phoebe probably tried to lock my personal card because she’s pouting. Call the bank.”
