For eleven months I worked nights and built my life around keeping my husband alive. When his treatment finally ended with the news we’d prayed for, I thought we’d survived the hardest part. I was wrong. Before we left hospital, Theo made a choice that forced me to question our entire marriage.
“Say it again.”
Dr. Kahn smiled at me from across his desk.
“The scans show no evidence of disease, Alicia.”
I stared at him.
“No. The other part.”
“Say it again.”
Beside me, my husband, Theo, sat with both hands between his knees.
Dr. Kahn understood.
“Right now, we see no evidence of cancer.”
A laugh escaped me, but it broke into a sob halfway out.
I covered my mouth.
Dr. Kahn understood.
