My mother-in-law had no pension; I cared for her for twelve years as if she were my own mother… and before she died, she left me a torn pillow, whispering: “It’s for you, Mable.” No one in the house understood why she gave it to me… until that very night when I felt something hard hidden inside.
PART 1
My name is Mabel.
I got married at twenty-six and entered a family that was already fractured. My father-in-law had passed away very young, and my mother-in-law, Fiona, was left alone to raise her four children with the little she earned from working farmlands in rural Ohio. She farmed corn and soybeans her entire life. She never had insurance, she never had a break, and she certainly never had a pension.
By the time I arrived, almost all of her children had moved on with their lives. They visited her rarely. Sometimes they called. Sometimes not even that.
In the end, the old woman ended up staying with us. And she also ended up becoming more and more alone.
The neighbors whispered a lot.
“Poor Mabel, she seems more like a full-time nurse than a daughter-in-law.”
“Let’s see if the other kids actually show up when the old woman passes.”
