I put my husband’s coat away.
A hotel key card fell out.
Hilton Garden Inn.
22 miles from our house.
I called.
“Room 718.
Checked in every Wednesday.
For eleven months.”
I checked our credit card.
No charges.
He had been paying cash.
$149 a night.
$6,512 total.
The next Wednesday, I followed him.
His car arrived at 6:15 PM.
A woman arrived at 6:18 PM.
They walked inside separately.
I waited thirty minutes.
Then I knocked on Room 718.
My husband opened the door.
His shirt was untucked.
For twelve seconds, he said nothing.
Then he stepped aside.
A woman was sitting on the bed.
She looked up.
I recognized her.
It was my husband’s younger sister, Rachel.
My stomach dropped.
I looked at him.
Then at her.
Neither spoke.
Finally, my husband said:
“She came to me.”
Rachel looked down.
“She said if I didn’t meet her every Wednesday, we’d have to tell you what happened between her and your…”
He stopped.
“Between her and my what?”
Rachel began crying.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“My father?”
She nodded.
“Your father and I had a secret for twenty-three years.”
“What secret?”
Rachel stood.
“I was seventeen when it happened.”
“What happened?”
“Your father found me after I ran away.”
Then she said the words I never expected:
“I was pregnant.”
“Whose child?”
She looked directly at me.
“Your father’s.”
My knees nearly gave out.
My husband handed me a folder.
Inside were old photographs.
My father.
Rachel.
And a newborn baby.
Then I found a birth certificate.
Rachel was listed as the mother.
The father’s name was blank.
The date was from twenty-three years ago.
