My brother reached the house before anyone else. What he found changed everything.

Derek stood at the front door, one hand hovering near the handle as movement shifted on the other side. He stayed silent for a moment, listening. Behind him, the driveway was empty, and somewhere down the street a car passed without slowing.

Then the door opened.

Travis appeared in the gap.

“Who the hell are you?”

Derek did not answer immediately. He looked past him into the house.

“Where’s Noah?”

Travis’s expression changed. For the first time, the confidence in his face slipped.

“What are you doing here?”

“I asked where Noah is.”

Travis stepped farther into the doorway, blocking the view inside. Derek could hear something faint from deeper in the house. A small sound. A whimper, followed by silence.

Derek’s voice became even calmer.

“I’m his uncle. I’m here to make sure he’s okay.”

“You need to leave.”

“No.”

The word was quiet, but final.
