My brother reached the house before anyone else. What he found changed everything.

Travis moved toward him.

Derek did not move forward. He did not raise his hands. He simply planted himself where he was and kept his eyes on Travis.

“I already called the police,” Derek said. “They’re coming.”

Travis glanced toward the street.

That was when Derek noticed something on the floor behind him.

A small red plastic wheel from Noah’s toy truck.

And beside it, a dark smear on the hardwood.

Derek’s stomach tightened.

“Where is the boy?”

“He’s fine.”

“Then let me see him.”

Travis shook his head.

“You can’t come inside.”

Derek heard Noah again.

This time there was no mistaking it.

“Uncle Derek?”

Derek’s face changed.

“I’m right here, buddy.”

Travis turned his head sharply toward the hallway.

That brief movement was enough.

Derek saw Noah.

The boy was standing several feet back, one arm held tightly against his chest. His face was wet with tears, and the sleeve of his shirt had already started to darken around the elbow.
