I Returned Three Days Later—And Found a Document With My Forged Signature.

PART 1

“Hit her again! Women like her need to be taught who’s in charge,” my mother-in-law shouted as my husband raised his hand for the second time in front of our sixteen-year-old daughter.

Three days earlier, I would never have imagined that my eighteen-year marriage would end up breaking up over a bedroom. My name is Rebecca Foster, I am 43 years old, and I live in Columbus. I have a small sewing workshop near the Westside Market, where I spend my days working with fabrics. My husband, Brandon Palmer, works as a driving instructor at a local school. Our only daughter, Hannah, is currently in her second year of high school.

The house where we lived had three levels, providing plenty of space for our small family. We built it nine years ago on a plot of land my parents gave me when I got married. My dad held my hands back then and gave me a piece of advice that I would never forget.

“This piece of land is for you, sweetheart,” he told me warmly. “You never know what life has in store, so keep it safe.”

After my father-in-law died, Mrs. Gertrude, my mother-in-law, moved in with us. I set up a cozy room for her on the ground floor so she wouldn’t have to climb any stairs. We lived together without major arguments, except for one recurring issue regarding Brenda, Brandon’s younger sister. For Mrs. Gertrude, Brenda was always the perpetual victim who could do no wrong.

One Monday afternoon in October, Hannah called me while I was still working at the shop.

“Mom, my aunt Brenda just arrived with two heavy suitcases,” Hannah said over the phone. “And cousin Toby is here too, while Grandma says Aunt Brenda just got a divorce.”

I closed the workshop early and went back home immediately to see what was happening. Brenda was crying softly in the living room, and her ten-year-old son, Toby, was tightly clutching his backpack on the sofa. According to her tearful story, Jason, her ex-husband, had returned after working abroad for several years and now wanted to take the boy away from her.

I thought helping a family member in need was the right thing to do. I prepared the guest room on the third floor for them, which included a double bed, a spacious closet, and a private bathroom just steps away. I even told Brenda that she could stay with us until she found a stable job and got back on her feet.
