PART 1
When I finally got pregnant after six years of trying, my husband, Caleb, was overjoyed. He came to every appointment.
His mother, Margaret, helped me with everything.
I couldn couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have such a wonderful husband and mother-in-law. We couldn’t wait for our little Nora to be born.
My delivery went smoothly. Nora was born perfectly healthy.
But when Caleb first bent over her, his smile vanished.
“No. This can’t be happening! This isn’t the baby I wanted!”
Margaret leaned closer and clicked her tongue disapprovingly.
“What a disappointment,” she said.
“You’re scaring me,” I said, pulling our daughter closer. “What’s wrong?”
Caleb stepped back without looking at either of us.
“When you’re discharged, don’t come home. I want a divorce. I can’t believe you did this to me.”
I looked at Margaret, desperate for her to say something. But she simply followed Caleb out while I sat there trying to soothe our crying baby.
Over the next two days, I kept checking my phone, hoping Caleb would apologize. I even sent him a photo of Nora’s tiny hand gripping my finger, hoping he would remember how much we had wanted her.
He never replied.
As soon as I was discharged from the hospital, we drove over to collect my things.
My clothes were outside in trash bags, the diaper bag beside them.
Caleb didn’t even come outside to see Nora.
I cried all night at my parents’ house.
I had no idea how I would raise Nora alone, but I wouldn’t beg her father for help if he couldn’t appreciate this gift from God.
The next day, someone rang the doorbell.
Caleb and Margaret stood on the doorstep in tears.
“Please,” he said. “Let us see Nora. This is very important. If we don’t, we’re finished.”
“You saw her. Then you threw us out. Why are you here?”
He dropped to his knees, clutching my robe.
“You don’t understand. I should have told you long before you got pregnant.”
“Then tell me now.”
Margaret grabbed his shoulder.
“Caleb, she won’t understand—”
“No, Mom. She has to know.”
When he finally told me, I reached for the doorframe, but my knees gave way.
Behind me, Mom kept calling my name, but I couldn’t answer.
I could only stare at my husband in utter shock.
PART 2
I had spent six years dreaming about becoming a mother, but nothing prepared me for how quickly that dream could turn into a question I couldn’t answer. My husband disappeared behind a secret he’d kept for years, and when the truth surfaced, I had to decide which family my daughter deserved.
“No. This can’t be happening! This isn’t the baby I wanted!”
Caleb’s voice cut through the room so sharply that I looked at him before I looked at our daughter.
“What are you talking about?”
He didn’t answer.
Less than an hour earlier, he’d been crying beside me, kissing my forehead and telling me how proud he was. Now he was staring at Nora like he’d found something he couldn’t explain.
I tightened my arms around her.
“Caleb, look at me.”
His mother, Margaret, stepped closer.
She looked at Nora, then at Caleb.
“What a disappointment,” she said.
My exhaustion vanished.
“Stop. What’s wrong?”
Margaret pressed her lips together while Caleb stepped back.
The nurses had checked Nora. She was healthy.
So what were they seeing?
“Then why are you looking at her like that?”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I can’t do this, Gwen.”
“Do what?”
He wouldn’t answer.
My heart started pounding.
“Caleb, if you’re accusing me of something, say it.”
His eyes met mine.
“When you’re discharged, don’t come home, Gwen. I want a divorce. I can’t believe you did this to me.”
I couldn’t make sense of the sentence.
“Did what?”
He turned toward the door.
“Caleb.”
Margaret caught his arm.
“Come on. Not here.”
I stared at her.
“You know what this is about, don’t you?”
Her eyes dropped to Nora.
That scared me more than Caleb’s anger.
“Tell me, Margaret.”
She looked at her son.
“Let’s go, sweetheart.”
I shifted Nora higher against my chest.
“No. You don’t get to walk out after saying that. Caleb, look at your daughter.”
