They judged me for taking public transport. I didn’t argue or explain myself. They had no idea what was coming.

I didn’t.

I simply checked my watch.

Then the airport called with a message nobody at the table expected:

“Ma’am, your helicopter fleet is approaching…”

Suddenly, no one was laughing.

“Still taking public transport?” Mom asked from across the Thanksgiving table, her smile sharp. “Your sister has three cars.”

My younger sister, Vanessa, raised her wineglass and gave a satisfied little laugh.
