My name is Sarah Mitchell, and the happiest day of my life became the day I realized my family was nothing like I had believed.
Just hours after marrying Daniel, the love of my life, I delivered our twin boys by emergency C-section. The labor had been long and terrifying. Both babies were healthy, but I was exhausted and in pain, drifting in and out of sleep while Daniel stayed beside me.
Then the door burst open.
My parents walked in without knocking, followed by my younger sister, Olivia.
Olivia had struggled with infertility for years. I had cried with her after failed treatments and supported her through every disappointment. I understood her grief.
But I never expected what came next.
Dad stared at the bassinets beside my bed.
“You have two boys,” he said calmly. “Olivia has none.”
I frowned, thinking it was some awful joke.
Then he added, “You should give her one.”
I laughed weakly.
“Dad… that’s not funny.”
“I’m serious.”
The room went silent.
Mom folded her arms.
“It would solve everyone’s problems.”
Olivia said nothing. She simply stared at my babies with tears in her eyes.
I pulled the bassinets closer.
“These are my sons.”
Dad stepped toward me.
“You don’t need two.”
Daniel immediately moved between him and the babies.
“They’re leaving,” he said firmly.
Dad ignored him.
“Family sacrifices for family.”
I could barely sit upright, but I forced out one word.
“No.”
It wasn’t loud or dramatic.
Just firm.
“No.”
Dad’s face turned red.
“You’ve always been selfish.”
“I carried these babies for nine months,” I answered. “They’re not gifts. They’re my children.”
Without warning, he slammed both fists onto the mattress beside my abdomen, jolting the bed.
Pain tore through my fresh incision and I cried out.
The monitors started beeping.
Nurses rushed inside.
